a road trip through alaska

On Monday, June 8th, I flew home from NZ for Michelle’s high school graduation. Two days later, I flew out to Anchorage, Alaska for a family road trip.

Alaska was NEVER on my radar. I had dinner with my dad a few weeks prior and he asked me if I wanted to go to Alaska with the rest of my extended family. The trip had fit with my schedule so I told my dad, “Sure, why not?”

First of all, I don’t think many people can say they experienced both New Zealand and Alaska within a two-week time span. I know. It’s wack. But, it was interesting to see the differences and the many similarities including the kindness of people, the sheer grandeur of the landscape, endless outdoor activities, and so so so many mountains, ocean, glacier-fed rivers, and more! oh, my!

While we flew into Anchorage, my family rented these huge RVs as we made our way through the national parks and Homer, Alaska for some good ol’ halibut fishing! Not quite sure I could live in an RV again, but it was quite the experience and something I can check off my bucket list!

Highlights:

  • Halibut Fishing in Homer, Alaska!

    • I am blessed because the boat ride was so awful, but I somehow managed to not seasick. We spent 10 hours on the boat. The weather was rough and the fishes were being stubborn. But, surprise!! I actually really enjoy fishing and I managed to catch the most halibuts including a 40-pound fish. Side note: halibuts are very ugly, but I totally recommend going fishing on a charter boat if you find yourself in Alaska!

  • Tour of the Glaciers

    • One of the most stunning views I have been privileged to see in person.

  • Running along the ocean shore

    • I’m not quite sure how to describe Alaska’s beauty, but when I had free time, I went running a few times along the water. I was jamming with my music and I seriously couldn’t stop smiling because the view was so beautiful.

At the end of the day, the best part of this trip was spending time with my parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins!! If anything, it was a hot second since I’ve spent quality time with my family because of school, but, it felt really good to be back again!
