foodie heaven

I need more friends who travel for food. At times, NUS can feel like a bubble. Within University Town, there’s the gym, an infinity pool, a huge lawn with constant activities, canteens with good and cheap food, etc. Honestly, what more do you need to feel comfortable. But, then I remind myself, “Catherine, you’re living in SINGAPORE for 5 months.” There will always be more to see, more to do, and most importantly, MORE TO EAT.

And that’s where Mitchell comes into play because I need more friends who watch food vlogs (ex. Strictly Dumpling), do their research, and drag me out to new foodie spots. This was one of my favorite days spent in SG because it was day full of yummy food and good company. And I have to admit, I love this new friendship that is blooming considering the context of how Mitchell and I knew each other before NUS hehe.

The absolute best part is that we only spent 20 USD in total!

FIRST STOP: CHINATOWN

We had the most delicious Mala Hot Pot and one of my favorite meals in SG. It was just the perfect level of spice and various vegetables and meats complemented the flavors so well. Also, I have to say that People’s Park Hawker Centre is one of my favorites in town, and it’s always packed with locals! It’s 3 PM and oh boy, it’s HUMID. You’ll find families with a full course feast or old men playing their gambling games. If the locals are there, then you know the food is good.

Then, we had to find some sweets after lunch. With that, we went Tong Heng Bakery for egg tarts and red bean pastries! I’ve never found egg tarts to be that appealing, but the crust was perfectly flakiness and the filling had the most wonderful texture - it was so light and fluffy.

SECOND STOP: LITTLE INDIA

Little India is literally what you would imagine what “Little India” would look like. It’s a bustling area with so many vendors and fresh produce stands. To avoid the humidity, we took a pit stop at Madras New Woodlands for mango lassi and dosa. This was my first time having dosa and I couldn’t believe how massive it was (as pictured below with Mitchell for scale).

FINAL STOP: SATAY STREET

We headed to Lau Pa Sat, one of my favorite hawker centres because of the liveliness from satay street! Satay is definitely a must to try in SG, but I think it’s the liveliness and ambiance of Satay Street that keeps me coming back.

To say the least, it was a very filling day!! And I have never been so full in my entire life.
